Hot off the press (literally!)

The time has finally arrived! I’m so excited to share news of my dream collaboration - Harlequin x Diane Hill is available now!

It’s a gorgeous collection of chinoiserie wallpaper and chinoiserie fabric, that’s so beautiful, it elevates a space to something completely next level. I’ve just decorated my bedroom in Florence and genuinely, I can’t believe that an ordinary person (me!) can have a room that looks and feels so luxurious!

I’m incredibly passionate about sharing this art form and really believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the endless beauty of chinoiserie.

What’s different about this launch?

Ever since it first landed on our shores in the 18th century, hand painted chinoiserie wallpaper has only really been used by very high-end designers. It was (and still is) wonderfully glamorous and hugely sought after, with images often likened to dreams.

Now, I’m beyond delighted to fulfil my lifelong ambition of making chinoiserie more accessible. By using the niche skills I learnt in China and teaming up with Harlequin, I’m taking something that’s traditionally been super expensive and offering chinoiserie chic in an affordable way.

It’s all in the detail

Harlequin’s printing processes are spectacular and can pick up the tiniest detail drawn by the finest brushes. I’ve been lucky enough to have some serious support throughout this process, with the Harlequin team giving me access to their premium printing technology, which has reproduced my original silk paintings to an incredibly high standard.

Bedroom, living room, sleek or cosy?

This is what’s so amazing – chinoiserie can be used anywhere. I’ve seen it look equally fantastic in ultra-sleek, modern homes where everything is white and angular and also in cosy Victorian cottages.

Style and location don’t play a part in where or how to use my designs, just choose what makes you happy!

Creating chinoiserie wallpaper panels

All my murals are cleverly designed to fit any wall up to 3 meters high, so there’s no need for custom measuring. They have a super wide repeat that’s 2.8 meters across, which makes each design feel incredibly bespoke, even though it can be bought right off the shelf.

If you’re up for trying something a bit different, chinoiserie wallpaper looks fantastic framed on the wall. Creating a panelled effect adds such a luxurious feel, and it’s the perfect alternative if you’re thinking about moving designs between rooms. May we suggest using Florence, as pictured below.

Be inspired

The chinoiserie fabric and wallpapers in this collection are named after some epically inspirational female figures, such as Marsha P. Johnson, Marie Curie, Ella Fitzgerald and Nellie Bly. Just like their namesakes, each design is colourful, fresh, bold and uplifting.

If you need a little help working out where to start, here are a few ideas:

1. Rosa:

An excellent choice for high ceilings.

2. Florence:

Looks incredible in bedrooms.

3. Isabella:

A fantastic coordinate and looks brilliant teamed with Marsha.

4. Lady Alford:

Makes the most beautiful curtains and upholstery fabric.
